The novel focuses on the profound friendship and brotherly love based on Christian faith of three men: Efraim Markstrom, Lewi Petrus, and Sven Lidman. But it is as much a vivid depiction of the lives of individual characters as it is the story of the rise of a major and apparently still vital Protestant evangelical movement. Lewi's Journey (published in Sweden in 2001), like The Royal Physician's Visit, is a historical novel.
Turning from eighteenth-century Denmark and the international triumph of his The Royal Physician's Visit (published in Swedish in 1999 and in English in 2001), Enquist focuses here on Lewi Petrus and the rise of the Pentecostal movement in Sweden in the first half of the twentieth century. Lewi's Journey is the second in a remarkable series of major novels that Per Olov Enquist has written in the past decade.
