Even the dialogues seem very short and not very realistic. It’s almost as if the author would rather show us a photograph rather than trying to describe every nook and cranny.

The surroundings and even the house that should be the main character, are described in very short sentences with very few words and I find this a pity. The writing style is contradicting the atmosphere that the author tries to depict and therefor I find it not very successful. The character of her father seems much more interesting but then we only get glimpses of him which I think is a shame. Example: she sets out for at least a week with a truck full of building material and only a few protein bars. All her actions are not even close to rational or even justifiable. The main character, Maggie, is rather flat and annoying. So yes, storywise it is promising, but then again very run of the mill like every haunted house tale starts, and I hope that just as in the series, there will be massive twists that are coming our way. In case you’re interested in (repetive) past posts about the 2020 Goodread Choice Awards, you can find them here: Goodreads Choice Awards 2020: Round #1, and Goodreads Choice Awards 2020: Semifinal Round. In this first part the story is almost identical to ‘The haunting of Hill House’, but then the Netflix series (which I think to be the best series on Netflix of the past 5 years). Middle Grade & Children’s: The Trials of Apollo.Young Adult Fantasy & Science Fiction: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.Young Adult Fiction: Clap When You Land.Science & Technology: No Filter: The Inside Story of Instagram.Humor: I would pick A Punchable Face, but I think The Office: The Untold Story of the Greatest Sitcom of the 2000s: Oral History might win.Science Fiction: Totally guessing here, but I’d pick Network Effect, but I think An Absolutely Remarkable Thing will win.Fantasy: I would pick The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, but I think Crescent City will win.I think it’s got more favorable popularity than Valentine…though I think The Girl With the Louding Voice is one to watch (pun not intended)!Īnd, just for fun, here’s my pick and prediction for the remaining categories: I finally picked up Valentine and I loved it so much, so that one got my vote! I was sad to see Real Life was kicked out, but the remaining books are still really good. There are so many good books in this category.
